I just wanted to write a quick blog, in reaction to the quite shocking program that was broadcast on Monday- about the Menopause industry and the High dose Oestrogen approach being taken in some cases by the medical profession mainly based on Dr Louise Newson’s work.
Firstly, to say, I have been to see a specialist in the past who was on Dr Newson’s Advisory committee, and I would say in defence of the medical profession that my experience was not what we saw on the program.
As many of you know I have a history of breast cancer in my family which is why I went to see a specialist before taking HRT. At the right dose and carefully monitored, evidence suggests that HRT can be extremely beneficial for some women in conjunction with the correct Nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
With regards to supplements; within my scope of practice I do not work with supplements, but I know a lot of women spend an awful lot of money on them and some have very little scientific evidence to back up their efficacy.
My philosophy as a Naturopathic Coach is: FOOD FIRST, ALWAYS.
For complete transparency I take Vitamin D as I have read a lot of research which says that many people (not just women), especially women in their Menopause transition are deficient in Vitamin D for various reasons including poor absorption caused by inflammatory gut problems- and because we don’t get enough sunshine, especially in the UK in the winter.
I worked for a company that makes ingredients for supplements and I would say there is a lot of research happening in this area by ethical companies, but there are also products being targeted at women which are very expensive with somewhat dubious credentials !

My Advice to you is always look at your Nutrition before turning to the quick fix pills. Many of them just don’t work.
If you are struggling with Menopause symptoms such as:
Sleep disruption,
Weight gain,
Anxiety/depression,
Sore joints and muscles,
Lack of energy,
Brain fog,
Hot flushes,
Gut health issues
These can all be greatly improved and in a lot of cases resolved without medication and supplements. Sometimes a combination of HRT and Nutrition & Lifestyle solutions work well too.
