How to achieve your goals- Sue’s Story

It’s great to have goals, these may be to lose weight, to improve your general health or to improve a specific symptom you are struggling with – joint and muscle pain, insomnia, anxiety.

Or your goals may be some of the above and more like Sue – When Sue first came to me she was working in the NHS and knew that retirement was looming. She was very worried and not looking forward to life after retirement, not knowing what she was going to do with her time.

This is the story of Sue’s journey with me in her own words and how she learnt to continue reaching new goals after our work together:

My journey began by simply applying and then subsequently being chosen as one of Nicky’s case study clients. Initially, I wasn’t sure what to expect at the time or indeed if I was even a suitable candidate.

After a comprehensive initial assessment, a plan was drawn up and goals were set in place.

Nicky gave me the tools to get started which was accompanied with suggestions of Podcasts and ebooks which proved to be very helpful.

My health, well-being had a complete overhaul under Nicky’s guidance with suggestions on how even the smallest of changes can make a difference.

I decided to buy a notebook which in turn became my journal, I used it to document my journey from day one. This proved to be one of my favourite tools.

I used it to write about each meeting I had with Nicky, also the goals, intentions and results along with any stand-out moments.

Under Nicky’s guidance, I was given the confidence to make many changes by simply igniting a spark of intention to set me on a path of discovery. Nicky guided me along the way by checking in every week just see how I was getting on as well as regular face to face sessions.

At first I didn’t think there was anything to write down in my brand new journal, so I just wrote about our first meeting and some of the goals that Nicky set. Then I started to write about the plans I was going to put in place to achieve my intentions and subsequent goals. As the days went on, I began to write more and about my achievements and my “proud of” moments. I began to look forward to our next meeting so that I talk through everything I had managed to do.

Fast forward to the present day. I learnt so much about myself in a short space of time.

One of my notable intentions was to get out every day, regardless of the weather. So each morning I got up got dressed and went out for a brisk walk before breakfast. Some mornings felt harder than others but I still kept doing it getting up every day and going for a brisk walk for about 20 minutes to half an hour. This in turn sparked a new goal to one day get up on a Saturday morning and do the Parkrun except I wasn’t going to run. I was going to walk it the whole route. I’d never walked 5K briskly before so this was certainly a challenge as much as a goal. So the following Saturday I thought there’s no time not the present and I went along and registered when I got there. I was surprised how many actual walkers were there as well as ardent runners.

We all set off at exactly 9.00. I instantly felt part of a huge community of all of the Parkruns being held at this very moment all over the country. It took me well over an hour to complete the route and I was totally buzzing with an huge sense of achievement. I could hardly wait until next Saturday to do it all over again. I now challenge myself to achieve new PBs every week.  During one of the runs I got chatting to one of my fellow walkers and they asked me if I fancied entering the Race for Life in Bath in July. I immediately said no there’s no way I could walk 5K for charity. I thought it myself, maybe I’ll think about doing it next year when I’m perhaps a bit fitter.

I went home and sat there and thought about what the girl had said to me and then I heard Nicky’s voice in my head saying  “why wait until next year, you can definitely do this just go for it and apply….so I did!

In doing so, I not only achieved an intention, I reached a goal, made my family proud of me and in turn created a new goal. So, by entering the Race for Life, I’m not only doing something I would never have dreamt that I could be capable of, I’m raising loads money for a very worthwhile charity too!

During my time with Nicky, I received continuous support and guidance. I gained a much healthier lifestyle, Nicky gave me the confidence to strive for the best outcome and to continue to optimise my diet, health, fitness. I have no doubt that I couldn’t have made so many life affirming changes without Nicky.

I continue to follow Nicky’s advice and use the tools that she gave me.

I am enormously proud of the person I have become. I am very determined to not go back to that person I used to be.

Without Sue’s hard work and commitment, she would not have achieved so much.

I am really proud of her and proud to have been part of this journey with her.

Reaching your goals is firstly about understanding your current values and beliefs and often a change in mindset, before you can start to make real change to your confidence levels, your body and your mind.

This takes time and commitment but it can be lifechanging.

What a lovely article from Sue. I really like how she made the journal her own. I kept one for recording food and what I was feeling each day as advised by you, Nicky, but Sue turned hers into a something that took her on a real journey.

Some of the things you mentioned, Sue, resonates with me. For example, the smallest of changes make a huge difference.

Thanks @emma Taylor it’s amazing how powerful journaling can be isn’t it , just writing things down can help us make what seem like obvious connections , but they are not obvious if you don’t take time to observe and connect mind & body 😍
